A fire at actor Tracy Morgan’s apartment was started by a faulty bulb in a fish tank.

Tracy Morgan’s career isn’t the only thing on fire.

A faulty fish tank ignited a small blaze inside the “30 Rock” star’s luxurious Upper West Side home Wednesday morning, FDNY officials said.

The comedian was home at the time but was not injured when the light atop the giant fish tank appeared to spark the fire just after 8:30 a.m., officials said.

houston apartment fire from shirt on lampshade

Friday, December 26th, 2008

My power strip could have prevented this lamp from smoking and causing this danger and the claims for fire damage, water damage, and loss of rental income.

The second fire erupted just an hour later at a southwest Houston apartment complex in the 100 block of East Tidwell.

Officials said a woman had placed a shirt over a lamp shade in her 1-year-old child’s room, which may be the cause of the fire.

Light fixture burns greenhouse, injures tortoises

Sunday, December 14th, 2008

Modesto resident Jack Benenati and his wife…
Benenati realized a massive fire was burning in the tortoises’ greenhouse when the heat cracked his bathroom window.

Barefoot, in underwear and a T-shirt, he raced outside. He found a wall of orange heat blasting at him like a furnace. He grabbed a garden hose and aimed it in the tortoises’ direction. Benenati said fire officials believe the fire started in a light fixture and could have been smoldering for hours before the flames engulfed the greenhouse.

Over the eight days the tortoises stayed at UC Davis, the animals received many of the same burn treatments that humans would. Their burns were cleaned twice a day and the animals were given fluids to keep them hydrated. After eight days of treatment, the Benenatis took the tortoises home to Modesto. Of the 12 that were burned in the fire, seven are still alive.

Benenati doesn’t know how many of the tortoises will survive.more at LINK

considering all the things left plugged in in kids’ rooms, it’s a good spot for my SmokeShutoff power strip

Nightlight may have caused fire in child's room

A fire broke out in a unit at Mooloolaba on Meta Street. All that was visible to the street below was the blackened windows, but investigators said the 9-year-old inhabitant was lucky to survive. Photo: Cade Mooney/179514

From the outside, the only indication of a fire was two blackened window frames on the top floor.

However, investigators inside the Mata Street townhouse in Mooloolaba know just how lucky the nine-year-old occupant was to escape with his life

Night light blamed in fire

MARION HEIGHTS — An overheated night light was the apparent cause of a fire that damaged a former bar and restaurant Sunday.

Norman Fedder, state police fire marshal, pinpointed the cause and determined that the fire was accidental.

Fedder said the blaze started in an electrical receptacle on the south wall of the basement at 100 E. North St. and spread to the first-floor kitchen. He estimated damages at $75,000. It was not known whether the owner, Metro Burak, has insurance.

$15K damage, Self Storage, Waipi’o Uka

Friday, August 15th, 2008

Monday. Heat buildup in an extension cord plugged into a light fixture within a storage unit started the fire at Metro Self Storage, 94-1355 Waipi’o Uka St. Damage was estimated at $15,000 to the storage unit structure and $2,000 to contents.

My power strip would have shut off that light, possibly cooling the extension cord and it also might have summoned attention to the problem quicker.  But you have to wonder why a light at a self storage facility would need an extension cord.

Fluorescent light burns businesses in Naples FL

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008

Investigators determined that a blaze that destroyed two businesses and a storage unit on Friday night in Naples was an electrical fire that started in a light fixture in the ceiling.

“Somehow or another it short circuited back to the breaker panel,” Naples Fire Chief Jim McEvoy said.

The fire engulfed the free-standing building behind Andre’s Steakhouse at 8:37 p.m., gutting the two businesses inside: Euphoria Hair Design, 955 28th Ave. N., and Master Designer Florist, 961 28th Ave. N. Andre’s also had a storage unit inside the building.

About 35 firefighters had the fire contained just before 10 p.m.

It doesn’t appear any fault can be placed with the business owners. The state fire marshal determined the fire started in a fluorescent light fixture in the ceiling, McEvoy said.

“It was one of the bigger ones we’ve had in the last couple of years,” McEvoy said.

McEvoy said the building has been condemned.

There is almost always room to hang my power strip on the joists above suspended ceilings or bare joists where fluorescent lights are hung.  The ballasts fail and smoke, a common cause of fires with these appliances.  My power strip can shut them off, preventing these kinds of fires.

You could hang my SmokeShutoff power strip right up there in the rafters near that fixture.  It would shut the light fixture off at the first sign of smoke.
