Two heat lamp fires, Oskaloosa

Saturday, January 3rd, 2009

Twice in the last week Oskaloosa firefighters have put out fires ignited by heat lamps, including one kicked over by a goat.

A building that contains an insurance company, a travel agency and an apartment burned at 8 p.m. Wednesday in a fire that was blamed on an unattended heat lamp similar to those used to keep water pipes from freezing, Fire Chief Mark Neff said.

In addition, a goat apparently knocked over a heating lamp in a barn on Christmas Eve. Firefighters rescued all the animals from the barn on 260th Street and no other injuries were reported

Nobody was injured in Wednesday night’s fire, either, Neff said. The building, at 710 A Ave. West, sustained about $50,000 in damage. The woman who lives in the apartment was not home at the time, he said.

A crew of 14 firefighters contained the fire to the basement, but the building, which housed Randau Family Agency and Travel by Marco, is not currently inhabitable, Neff said.
