A fire that damaged one bedroom at 1 Whiton Ave. started when a child knocked a lamp onto a bed, a fire official said.
The fire was reported at 1:20 p.m. Thursday and was out within an hour, Deputy Fire Chief Jeffrey Starr said.
Despite heavy fire in the bedroom, there was no damage to the rest of the two-family house, Starr said.
There were no injuries.
Starr did not have an estimate of the damages.

Colonial Heights Fire officials have determined that a house fire Friday in the 400 Block of Lyons Avenue in Colonial Heights was started by a faulty electrical cord to a lamp. Firefighters responded to the blaze before noon and found heavy fire in the front living room. No one was at the house during the time of the incident, officials said. Damage to the house is estimated at $15,000. Officials said there were no smoke detectors installed in the home.

Emergency crews were called to the two-storey brick home at the corner of Chedoke and Aberdeen avenues yesterday at 2:10 p.m.
“We believe that it might have been a knocked over lamp, (an) electrical fire that started clothes and paper on fire,” said Hamilton District Chief Mark Hommersen.
Homeowner Jim Muirhead, 55, was watching television with his family when his eldest daughter, 11, smelled smoke. She went upstairs to check it out, then alerted Muirhead to the situation upstairs. Muirhead said when he went upstairs with a fire extinguisher the room was “just full of smoke.”

My power strip should be standard in hotel rooms. Where the coffee pot and the lamp are plugged in., just mount it up above the counter. It would have prevented this damage.
A blaze that damaged an Oxnard motel room on Thursday began when heat from a lamp caused a leather jacket to catch fire, authorities said.
The fire began about 2:45 p.m. after an occupant at the Comfort Inn, 1001 E. Channel Islands Blvd., left his jacket over a countertop lamp, said Battalion Chief Gary Sugich of the Oxnard Fire Department. The occupant was not in the room when the fire began.
The motel manager called firefighters after he went to check on a fire alarm in the room and found water from fire sprinklers leaking under the door, Sugich said. The sprinklers kept the blaze small, and Oxnard firefighters quickly extinguished it, Sugich said.
The fire caused an estimated $15,000 damage to the room and its furniture, Sugich said. No injuries were reported.

EUGENE, Ore. — A faulty lamp sparked a house fire Monday morning that forced the occupants to evacuate. No one was injured.
The fire marshal’s office determined a faulty lamp started the fire around 8:50 a.m. Monday morning. Smoke detectors alerted the occupants of the house, who evacuated without incident.
Three engine crews and two truck crews from Eugene Fire & EMS responded to the blaze.
Damage was estimated at $25,000.
No injuries reported in fire

The Greenbrier resort officials say approximately 70 guests were evacuated from their rooms last Saturday after a lamp cord started a fire on the third floor of the world-famous hotel.
Lynn Swann, public relations director, said no one was injured in the 4:45 a.m. fire and direct damage was limited to just one room in the resort’s main building. However, 11 other rooms were affected by water from sprinklers and fire hoses.
A guest was in the room at the time of the fire, she said.
Most of the damage in the room where the fire started was caused by water and the room is currently unavailable to guests.
“The Greenbrier Fire Brigade responded within two minutes and quickly contained the situation. The cause is believed to have been a lamp cord,” Swann said.

Their insurer should get my power strip manufactured. You’ve got water and smoke damage to the rooms, guests woke up at 4am. My power strip would have shut off power to that lamp cord at the first sign of smoldering.
The home is on Allied Road near Mission Gorge Road. No injuries were reported in the blaze, which started about 7:30 a.m.
Clothes left on a lamp ignited the flames, which caused $25,000 in damage, a fire department spokesman said.

A Derwood house that was undergoing some improvements caught fire Wednesday night, resulting in damages estimated at $175,000, fire officials reported.
No one was home at the time of the fire and no one was injured, said Pete Piringer, a spokesman for the county Fire and Rescue Service.

The fire burned undetected for some time until a passerby saw smoke coming from the house, Piringer said. The fire is believed to be accidental and to have originated in a second-floor bedroom. Fire investigators think a lamp on a timer came in contact with some combustibles in the room and ignited, he said.

IOWA CITY — A minor fire tonight at the University of Iowa’s Burge Residence Hall caused minor damage and no injuries but created a lot excitement on the first day of school.
Several young women who live on the same fifth-floor wing where the fire was located said they saw a bed sheet on fire on top of a lamp. The hallway filled with smoke and the fire alarm went off, they said.
Firefighters from the Iowa City Fire Department talk with officers from the University of Iowa Police Department as residents of Burge Residence Hall are allowed back into the dorm Monday.

Glad nobody hurt. Interesting the sprinklers didn’t kick on given the amount of smoke.
Campuses should provide my power strip to dorm residents. They are already plugging tons of rechargeable devices and other electronics that have been shown to cause fires. Students leave them plugged in and go to class or to sleep, and the outcome could be much more serious than this. My power strip can shut any of these devices off (like this lamp) at the first sign of smoldering. Plus my power strip sounds an alarm so other dorm residents have a chance to address the problem before all the sprinklers cause even more damage for minor smoke problems.
